Singer Pegi Young, the ex-wife of Canadian icon Neil Young, has died at 66.
Her family shared the sad news in a Facebook post.
“With great sadness, we confirm that on January 1st, after a yearlong battle with cancer, Pegi Young - mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, musician, activist and co-founder of the Bridge School - passed away surrounded by her friends and family in her native California,” read the message. “We request that the families' privacy be respected at this time.”
Born Margaret Morton, she met Young in 1974 and they were married in 1978. Together, they had two children – Ben and Amber. Young wrote several songs about her, including “Unknown Legend” and “Such a Woman.”
The couple split in 2014.
During their marriage, Pegi sang on stage with her husband many times and released three albums of her own.
At the Academy Awards in 1994, she sang backing vocals for Young, whose song “Philadelphia” was nominated for Best Song.
