We can all thank Eminem for the word "stan" being added into the Oxford English Dictionary.
If you can recall, the Detroit rapper dropped a song in 2000 with the same name. The dictionary has now cited the single in its definition. According to the word book, the new entry of "stan" is classified as a noun and it means, “An overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity.” The word also exists as a verb that means to "be an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity.”
The dictionary also reads, “Early 21st century: probably with allusion to the 2000 song ‘Stan’ by the American rapper Eminem, about an obsessed fan.” Em's "Stan" was featured on The Marshall Mathers LP. Take a walk down memory lane and listen to the extended version of it below.
