The stars are coming out on social media to pay tribute to soul singer Sharon Jones.
The longtime front woman of the Dap-Kings succumbed to pancreatic cancer on Friday. She was 60.
Jones was diagnosed with cancer in 2013.
"I just started crying," she told Rolling Stone about getting the news. ”All kinds of thoughts went through my head because I figured that I was going to die.”
The Georgia native worked as a backing vocalist for many years before jumping into the spotlight. She earned a Grammy nomination in 2014 for Best R&B Album (for Give the People What They Want).
Celebrities ranging from John Legend and St. Vincent to Colin Hanks and Beth Behrs quickly took to social media to share their grief and to remember the artist.
Producer Mark Ronson said on Twitter that Jones “had one of the most magnificent, gut-wrenching voices of anyone in recent times.”
He added: “She’ll be so missed. Too sad.”
Nile Rodgers called Jones “incredible and mighty.”
Musician Jason Isbell tweeted that she was “an incredibly strong person and a magical performer.”
Singer Ledisi shared: “What a fighter, what a friend, what a sister and what a singer. *tears*”
On Instagram, musician Grace Potter called Jones “a true and beautiful soul.”
She wrote: “My heart aches, but I smile to the night sky as I keep her in my memory. She lived every day to the fullest, danced like there was no tomorrow and lit a fire inside everyone she met. She was a teacher, a fighter, a sister, a dreamer, an amazing musician and most importantly...a true friend.”
“A major force. A beauty,” wrote Amy Millan of Jones, on Twitter. “She made the whole room sexy. She turned the toughest crowd into a dance party.”
Whoopi Goldberg said Jones “sang her butt off” while Roseanne Barr remembered Jones as “a genius.”
“She was the real deal in this industry,” Chaka Khan tweeted. “2016 you’ve been awful.”
Sara Bareilles tweeted simply: “No.”
