Fleetwood Mac is no more, according to frontwoman Stevie Nicks.
Speaking to MOJO Magazine, the rock legend has confirmed that the band would not be able to continue following the 2022 death of co-frontwoman Christine McVie.
“Without Christine, no can do,” Nicks said, answering a question about the band's future. “There is no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way. Without her, it just couldn’t work.”
McVie died on November 30, 2022 after suffering a massive stroke. At the time her family revealed that she had been in the hospital for a short period being treated for an undisclosed illness. However, it was later confirmed that she died from a “bilateral renal infarction and ischaemic stroke” as well as “large atrial thrombus” and “atrial fibrillation.”
Nicks said McVie's death happened so suddenly and because of it, unfortunately, she was unable to say goodbye to her long-time bandmate.
“It was all stunningly strange, because there wasn’t any lead up to it,” Nicks said. “We got a call, and I was going to rent a plane and go see her, but her family said, ‘Don’t come, because she may not be here tomorrow.’ And the next day, she passed away.
“I wanted to go there and sit on her bed and sing to her – which definitely would have made her pass away faster,” she added. “But I needed to be with her. And I didn’t get to do that. So that was very hard for me. I didn’t get to say goodbye.”
Nicks and McVie last performed together on their 2018-2019 tour, An Evening With Fleetwood Mac, which took place without frontman Lindsey Buckingham, who had been dismissed from the band prior to the tour. She also rejected any notion the band could continue even if Buckingham returned, after he underwent emergency open heart surgery in 2019.
“Even if I thought I could work with Lindsey again, he’s had some health problems,” she said. “It’s not for me to say, but I’m not sure if Lindsey could do the kind of touring that Fleetwood Mac does, where you go out for a year and half. It’s so demanding.”
