Tanya Tagaq released her fourth album, Retribution, on Friday. It's a follow-up to 2014's Animism.
Tagaq is, as always, intense, setting her arrangements around her skillful Inuit throat-singing, accompanied by noise, stomps, and beautiful eerie soundscapes.
A couple 7-minute tracks come speak to your guts directly.
Blending her power vocals with atmospheric realities to convey the environmental disaster we are all witnessing, Tagaq expresses herself directly, and clearly: "My mother grows angry, retribution will be swift / We squander her soil and suck out her sweet black blood."
Guests Tuvan throat singer Radik Tulush and Inuk singer Ruben Komangapik are also part of this project, making it as significant as Animism, if not more.
A surprise cover of Nirvana’s ''Rape Me" closes this powerful work.
