Taylor Swift donated $150,000 on Monday to a group that advocates for equal rights for LGBTQ people in her adopted home state.
The contribution to the Tennessee Equality Project came with a handwritten note from the pop superstar.
“I’m so inspired by the work you do, specifically in organizing the recent petition of Tennessee faith leaders standing up against the ‘slate of hate’ in our state legislature,” Swift wrote.
The singer was referring to bills that would, among other things, ban equal marriage and give adoption agencies the right to discriminate against LGBTQ parents for religious reasons.
Dozens of religious leaders opposed the bills for promoting “discrimination rather than justice and demean the worth of LGBTQ people in our state.”
Swift’s letter read: “Please convey my heartfelt thanks to them and accept this donation to support the work you and these leaders are doing. I’m so grateful that they’re giving all people a place to worship.”
The pop star’s cheque was for $113,000 U.S., reflecting her favourite number, 13.
On Facebook, the Tennessee Equality Project called Swift "a long-time ally to the LGBTQ community."
