Taylor Swift will be honoured in April for being a loud and proud ally of LGBTQ people.
GLAAD will present the pop star with the Vanguard Award at its Media Awards on April 16 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
“Taylor Swift proudly uses her unique ability to influence pop culture to promote LGBTQ acceptance,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said, in a release. "In a time of political and cultural division, Taylor creates music that unites and calls on her massive fan following to speak up and call for change.”
Swift has challenged U.S. politicians on equality and donated to LGBTQ rights organizations.
In last year’s hit “You Need To Calm Down,” Swift sings: “You're comin' at my friends like a missile / Why are you mad? / When you could be GLAAD? / Sunshine on the street at the parade / But you would rather be in the dark age / Just makin' that sign must've taken all night / You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace / And control your urges to scream about all the people you hate / ‘Cause shade never made anybody less gay.”
Last year, GLAAD gave the Vanguard Award to Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Previous recipients include Cher, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson.
