Not ones to remain idle, Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara held an event Wednesday night in Hollywood in a bid for equality for LGBT women in “economic status, health and representation.”

The event was attended by 50 LGBT women, including cofounders of TransLife, Nina Chaubal and Greta Gustava, and Oregon Governor Kate Brown, who spoke at the event.

However, it was Tegan and Sara's opening keynote speech which really floored attendees.

“Coming out at the age of 18 wasn't painless, it was 1998 after all but what was made clear by our entire family was that we deserved the same love, the saw laws, and the same respect as if we had been born heterosexual,” they told those in attendance.

They have long been advocates for change. Late last year, the pair launched the Tegan and Sara Foundation, which “works for economic justice, health, and representation for LGBTQ girls and women.”
