Canadian pop duo Tegan and Sara announced Tuesday they will release a collection of songs based on the first ones they ever wrote.
Hey, I’m Just Like You, the Quin twins’ ninth studio album, is their first since 2016’s Love You To Death. It drops Sept. 27.
“We think you’re going to love it,” read a tweet from Tegan and Sara. “Dare we go so far as to [prophesy]; it might be your new favourite?”
The album came about while Tegan and Sara were writing their memoir, High School (out Sept. 24).
“While working on our memoir, we discovered lost cassette tapes that had been unheard for over 20 years,” Tegan said, in a release. “They contained dozens of our first songs, written between the ages of 15 and 17.
“We immediately recognized the songs as an essential part of our high school story.”
Hey, I’m Just Like You was recorded in Vancouver this past April and May with an all-female creative team, including producer Alex Hope. It brings the twins back to their rock and punk roots – with a twist of pop.
“With only minor tweaks to lyrics and structure, we tried to remain true to the original essence of each song,” Sara said.
“This is the record we never could have made as teenagers, full of songs we never could have written as adults.”
