The biggest song in the U.S. this year came from Canada’s The Weeknd.
“Blinding Lights,” which the Toronto-born singer wrote with Ahmad Balshe (aka rapper Belly) and Jason Quenneville – both of whom grew up in the national capital region – has been named the top Billboard Hot 100 song for 2020.
Released at the end of November 2019, it went on to break records for the most weeks in the Top 5 and Top 10, including four weeks in the top spot.
The Hot 100 is compiled using data for sales, streaming and radio airplay.
“Blinding Lights” topped Post Malone’s “Circles,” Roddy Ricch’s “The Box,” Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” and DaBaby’s “Rockstar ft. Roddy Ricch. The rest of the Top 10 this year belongs to tracks by Harry Styles, Future ft. Drake, Maroon 5, Maren Morris and Lewis Capaldi.
