Canada’s The Weeknd has the biggest song of the year so far in the United Kingdom.
According to Official Charts, “Blinding Lights” leads the way with 1.89 million “chart sales” – comprised of 177,000 downloads and 211 million streams. The song, from After Hours, spent eight weeks at No. 1 in the UK.
“Blinding Lights” is also the UK’s most-streamed song of 2020 so far and After Hours is ranked the 19th biggest album of the year.
The song, which The Weeknd co-wrote with fellow Canadians Jason Quenneville (aka DaHeala) and Ahmad Balshe (aka Belly), debuted in a Mercedes Benz commercial last November.
“Blinding Lights” is featured in a commercial for the Mercedes Benz EQC 400 that stars The Weeknd. The company released an extended version on Friday.
The Weeknd is one of three Canadian artists who have had big songs this year across the pond. Drake’s “Toosie Slide” is ranked the 22nd top-selling song in the first three-quarters of 2020 (right behind “Life is Good” by Future ft. Drake) and Justin Bieber’s “Intentions” ft. Quavo is at No. 28.
The biggest song in the UK so far this year from a domestic artist is “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa, which is ranked fourth.
