THEORY takes on domestic abuse in “History Of Violence,” the first single from the band’s forthcoming seventh studio album.
The track comes with a dramatic video directed by Sam Sulam.
According to frontman and songwriter Tyler Connolly, it “tells the sad story of a girl trapped in a life of domestic abuse, leaving her with what she feels is the only way to escape. Even though she’s in jail, it’s still a better place to be than being imprisoned in real life by this man.”
“History Of Violence” is one 10 songs on THEORY’s Say Nothing, which will be released Jan. 31. Every pre-order of the album includes an instant download of the song.
The album, which was recorded in London with producer Martin Terefe, was inspired by racism, American political divisions and other social issues.
“I look at the record as a microcosm of our current era,” said guitarist Dave Brenner, in a release. “It’s a reminder to look inward at what’s happening and what we’re becoming. I hope everyone dives into the words.
“At the same time, music is still an escape. Maybe we can give the world a little solace and encourage everyone to treat each other better.”
On the same day the album comes out, THEORY will kick off a tour of its native Canada with a show in Vancouver. Tickets go on sale to the public on Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. local time.
