Tanya Tagaq is among the Canadians named to the Order of Canada on Friday.
The 41-year-old throat singer from Cambridge Bay is the 29th person from Nunavut to receive the honour. She will be made a Member of the Order of Canada at an upcoming ceremony.
In a statement accompanying a list of 100 recipients, Governor General David Johnston said Canadians should be “inspired by the examples set by these remarkable Canadians and use this occasion to build a smarter and more caring country.”
Tagaq has released four studio albums since 2005, including October’s Retribution. It includes a cover of Nirvana’s “Rape Me” and a collaboration with Canadian rapper Shad.
The singer won the Polaris Music Prize in 2014 for her third album Animism and has been nominated several times for Juno Awards — taking home a trophy in 2015 for Aboriginal Recording of the Year.
Other Order of Canada recipients named this week include comedian David Steinberg as well as opera singers Russell Braun and Michael Schade and Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore.
Tagaq is on tour in Europe in January but returns home to Canada for a March 4 appearance with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She currently has six concerts scheduled in Canadian cities in March and May.
