Tory Lanez has been sentenced to ten years in prison for the shooting that wounded fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion.
The sentencing was handed down by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford on Tuesday (August 8), after the rapper from Brampton, ON (real name Daystar Peterson) was convicted in December 2022 for one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm; one count of carrying a concealed, loaded, and unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and one charge of discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
Although Megan Thee Stallion did not attend the sentencing, explaining that she “simply could not bring myself to be in a room with Tory again," the rap superstar did issue a statement that was read by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta. “Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace,” she wrote. “Slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same.”
Megan did testify during the trial, explaining that she and Lanez had attended a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills home on July 12, 2020. Afterwards when she was in Lanez's SUV he fired a gun at the back of her feet and yelled at her to dance when she tried to walk away. She has previously detailed the trauma she experienced, which led to mental health struggles.
About the sentencing, Lanez’s lawyer Jose Baez said he was "very disappointed." “I have seen vehicular homicide and other cases where there’s death and the defendant still gets less than 10 years,” he added.
Prosecutors on the case were seeking a 13-year sentence, while lawyers for Lanez recommended probation and release from jail so he could enter a residential substance abuse program. Lanez's lawyers plan to appeal his conviction. The maximum sentence he could have received was just shy of 23 years in prison.
