Trans-Siberian Orchestra band leader and producer Paul O'Neill died yesterday at the age of 61.

O'Neill died from a chronic illness, according to the band, though the exact cause has not been made public.

"The entire Trans-Siberian Orchestra family, past and present, is heartbroken to share the devastating news that Paul O’Neill has passed away from chronic illness," wrote the band on its official Facebook page.

O'Neill's career in music began on the management side. He later became a producer, working with bands like Aerosmith (for Classics Live I & II) , Badlands, Metal Church and his main project besides TSO, Savatage.

TSO released several multi-platinum albums and grossed millions on tour under O'Neill's leadership.

"He was our friend and our leader – a truly creative spirit and an altruistic soul," said the TSO statement. "This is a profound and indescribable loss for us all."

The group added that they will made an additional announcement soon.
