John Geils, who lent his name to the J. Geils Band as well as being its guitarist, died Tuesday. He was 71.
Geils was found by police officers called to do a wellness check at his home in Groton, Massachusetts.
The J. Geils Band was best known for '80s hits like “Centerfold”, “Freeze Frame” and “Come Back”. The band consisted of Geils as well as lead vocalist Peter Wolf, Geils, Magic Dick on harmonica, keyboardist Seth Justman, bassist Danny Klein, and Stephen Bladd on drums.
"Thinking of all the times we kicked it high and rocked down the house! R.I.P. Jay Geils," lead singer Wolf wrote on Facebook.
Geils played with the band through the '70s and '80s, eventually suing the band for touring in the '90s – when he was no longer involved – while still using his name.
Tributes flooded social media when many discovered the rock 'n' roller had died, including posts from Little Steven’s Stevie Van Zandt and Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello.
