People are taking to social media to react to a report Wednesday claiming that Maroon 5 will perform next year’s Super Bowl halftime show.
“Usually the NFL chooses a musical act to attract people who don't like or care about football,” tweeted author Bryan Bishop. “Apparently this year they're choosing an act for people who don't like or care about music.”
Variety cited “multiple sources” as confirming Adam Levine’s band has been chosen for the 2019 Super Bowl. A spokesperson for the NFL told the publication: “We are continuing to work … on our plans but do not have any announcements to make on what will be another epic show.”
Reps for Maroon 5 also declined comment.
Typically, Super Bowl halftime show headliners – who do not get paid – use the exposure to promote a new album or a tour. Maroon 5 is already on tour in support of their album Red Pill Blues, which came out last November. They have shows scheduled through June 2019.
Many fans went on social media to urge the NFL to instead spotlight hip-hop acts from Atlanta, where the big game will take place on Feb. 3.
Here are some of the reactions on Twitter:
Picking Maroon 5 to do the Superbowl halftime show in Atlanta is like going to Olive Garden in Italy.
