U2's groundbreaking residency at Sphere in Las Vegas is getting extended for additional dates.
As Sphere's owner James Dolan continues to search for new acts to perform at the unique venue, the New York Post reports that the Irish rockers will add an additional 12 concerts to their 25-show residency, which was originally scheduled to end on December 16.
The U2 UV: Achtung Baby experience cost a reported $10 million to put together, which sees Bono, The Edge and Adam Clayton perform in front of 17,500 fans using the massive 16K-resolution screens to create the one-of-a-kind spectacle.
Considering the amount of money required to invest in a new act, extending U2's run of shows makes sense from a financial perspective - for both the venue and the band (Live Nation confirmed that U2 earns approximately $4 million per show). A source told the Post, “The band is less important than the visuals. People want the Sphere experience more than the band.”
Dolan told the New York Times that Sphere's next two acts are booked, however, no announcement has been made as to who they are. Rumours have circulated that the Eagles are expected to be one of the bands to take up a residency, closing out their farewell tour, The Long Goodbye, but nothing has yet been confirmed.
