UPDATE: In late March, Cher announced: “Unfortunately, I will be unable to leave Los Angeles during the scheduled filming as I am dealing with a serious family issue that prevents me from going on location for the April filming.”
Pop superstar Cher is heading to Toronto soon to star in Flint, a TV movie about a family coping with the contaminated water crisis in the Michigan city.
A federal state of emergency was declared in January 2016 after thousands of Flint residents were exposed to high levels of lead in their drinking water.
Cher, 70, is also an executive producer of the Lifetime movie along with Katie Couric, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. (Zadan and Meron produced 2002's Oscar-winning musical Chicago in Toronto.)
Cameras will roll in April with director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy).
Cher has spoken out about the contaminated water crisis and, in January 2016, sent more than 180,000 bottles of water to Flint residents.
This will be her first acting role since 2010’s Burlesque, in which she co-starred with Christina Aguilera. She won an Oscar in 1988 for Moonstruck, which was directed by Toronto’s Norman Jewison.
