Ariana Grande celebrates wealth (and friendship) in her hot new track “7 Rings,” which debuted overnight.
The song borrows a melody from 1959’s “My Favourite Things” from the Rogers Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music.
“Whoever said money can't solve your problems / Must not have had enough money to solve ‘em,” Grande sings, adding that “happiness is the same price as red-bottoms” (referring to Christina Louboutin shoes).
The pop star is clearly putting a difficult 2018 behind her. In addition to mourning the sudden death of her ex Mac Miller, Grande and comedian Pete Davidson called off their engagement.
Grande almost raps: “Been through some bad s**t, I should be a sad bitch / Who woulda thought it'd turn me to a savage? / Rather be tied up with cuffs and not strings / Write my own checks like I write what I sing.”
In December, the singer told Billboard about the inspiration for the song.
“Me and my friends went to Tiffany’s together, just because we needed some retail therapy,” she explained. “You know how when you’re waiting at Tiffany’s they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring.”
Grande sings: “Wearing a ring, but ain't gon' be no Mrs. / Buy matching diamonds for six of my bitches / I’d rather spoil all my friends with my riches / Think retail therapy my new addiction.”
The video for “7 Rings,” directed by Hannah Lux Davis, features Tayla Parx, Victoria Monét, Njomza, Alexa Luria, and Courtney Chipolone (five of the six real-life friends who got rings) and Rim Taya Shawki. Grande’s dog Toulouse makes a cameo.
