The Avett Brothers stood in a field of sunflowers to perform their new song “Victory” on Tuesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live.
"Accolades and happy days / They don't ever last," sings Scott Avett. "Stories of courage clouded up with fear."
The song is on the new EP The Third Gleam, which comes out Friday and creates a trilogy following 2006’s The Gleam and 2008’s The Second Gleam.
In an interview with The Charlotte Observer, the Avetts said the EP was recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic but still feels timely.
“When some big thing happens in the world that connects everybody, we don’t always need artists to articulate it for us. Or remind us,” said Seth Avett. “It seems to me that in a time of struggle, a time of suffering, there is a lot of art that is appropriate. And some of it has nothing to do with the suffering.
“It just so happens that a lot of the themes that we wrote about that made their way onto this record are themes that are old and are in the future as well. So all that just kind of lined up, without having to think about it. But if the record was super-light, and didn’t address anything heavy, I think it would also be appropriate to put it out.”
