Selling music in 2024 is harder than ever, so Coldplay decided to take a decades-old approach and promote their new album, Moon Music (out today), on American shopping channel QVC.
The whole band - Chris Martin, Will Champion, Jonny Buckland and Guy Berryman - appeared on the channel to perform a few songs and mingle with host Jennifer Coffey, who seemed extra excited to have the band on with her.
While the band teased obvious promotional dummy items like a rather cheap-looking tea set, a frisbee and a toaster that prints "Moon Music" on your bread, they did actually sell an exclusive CD notebook edition of the album, which you can purchase here.
Martin seemed very into the appearance, joking that the tea set was "vastly more important than the album because we’re older now, we’re moving into crockery and Tupperware. The music is really just serving our kitchen line now.”
The band also took the opportunity to perform some new tracks, including "feelslikeimfallinginlove" and "JUPiTER" featuring Soweto's Mzansi Youth Choir. Committing to the bit, they even took some phone calls on old-school red telephones, hamming it up with some fans.
According to Coffey, the vinyl edition sold out during the broadcast, and at one point more than 31,000 people were searching for copies of the record on the QVC website. Who knew TV was the future of selling music?
