H.E.R. gave a memorable performance during Sunday night’s 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards.
The R&B star covered Prince’s 1985 track “Nothing Compares 2 U” – a monster hit for Sinead O’Connor in 1990 – for the show’s "In Memoriam" segment.
Earlier in the day, H.E.R. teased her performance to E!. “I’m definitely gonna be bringing out some instruments and I think it's going to be very emotional. And that's all I'm gonna say,” she said. “I want it to be special, I want it to be a surprise, but I think you're gonna love it.”
The 23-year-old singer accompanied herself on piano and guitar as the names and faces of TV industry insiders who died over the past year were displayed – including Fountains of Wayne frontman Adam Schlesinger (who wrote songs for TV and film) and former Glee star Naya Rivera.
Earlier in the Emmys show, singer Elton John praised Schitt’s Creek for its “big Canadian heart.” The singer, who is married to Canada’s David Furnish, noted that Emmy-winning star Dan Levy was named after his 1973 song “Daniel.”
