John Legend is giving fans a candid look behind the scenes of the video for his single "Penthouse Floor.”
The song is from Legend's latest album Darkness and Light, and the official music video, directed by Dominique Deleon, debuted earlier this month.
In the politically-charged visual, we see a protest outside of a hotel where Legend is working with protesters from Black Lives Matter as well as feminist protesters and even a reference to Colin Kaepernick and the NFL protests. Meanwhile, inside the hotel, a fundraiser for Trump is taking place in a room full of his supporters.
In the behind-the-scenes video above, Legend explains that Deleon came to him with the concept for the video to go along with the message of the track. "I felt like it really fit the spirit of the song perfectly," Legend said.
Deleon explained: "The idea for this video, this hotel that John works in, we take him back to his days being John Stephens, Employee of the Month. There's a protest going on outside, and inside, there's a fundraiser for Trump. And as John goes through these different levels of the hotel, he's not only going through different levels of access to luxury and wealth. But he's getting closer and closer to that point where he reaches his dreams.
“So when he reaches the penthouse, he unites everybody, and brings everybody together, and it's very reflective of who John is as a person. He's a uniter and a person who really wants to understand all sides of the spectrum. So that's what we tried to do in the video.”
Legend added: "The video is going to help the song come alive, because it explores some of the topics of the song, and helps you connect it to real life.”
