Keith Urban has released a dancers version of his video for “The Fighter” featuring Carrie Underwood.
The video, directed by John Urbano, features a specially choreographed dance from dancers Lindsay Richardson and Lyle Beniga, who appeared in the original video for the country song. Urban spoke about the video’s genesis in a press release:
“John [Urbano] said, ‘I know this girl who dances, sort of street dancing; I don’t even know what it is, but it was so good, and John said, ‘Listen to the song and watch her dance at the same time,’ and they just went together so incredibly well that we decided to put out a full ‘dancers’ version.'”
The result is a unique take on the call-and-release song. Dance-only videos are nothing new – Justin Bieber did one for “Sorry” and Sia has been a fierce advocate of using contemporary dance to deliver her message.
The inspiration for the song, Urban says, came in thinking about his relationship with wife Nicole Kidman.
“It’s a song about helping to heal and protect someone you love. It’s a song about reassurance that you’ll always be there to take the blows the world can throw,” the country star says. “Carrie and I had sung together before, and I thought our voices blended really well — so she was unquestionably the right choice. It was such a relief that she wanted to do it.”
Urban will perform the song at tonight’s ACM Awards. Watch the video below:
