There was panic and confusion Saturday during a performance by Madison Beer at an outdoor festival in California.
The 20-year-old stopped singing a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” when she noticed a commotion in the crowd and walked to the side of the stage. “What’s going on?” she is heard asking her crew.
Rumours swirled on social media that a man pulled out a gun and pointed it at Beer – but police said this is not true.
“There was a disturbance … but no weapon was involved and no one was injured,” police said. “The man who caused the disturbance was removed from the grounds, there was no threat to the community.”
Beer took to social media to thank fans for being concerned and assure them “no real weapon was found.”
The singer wrote: “Watching videos of all my fans run away in fear truly breaks my heart. after police confirmed the incident was handled i returned to the stage and we finished the show. concerts should be a safe place for us to enjoy music together.”
On Instagram, Beer’s mother Tracie described the kerfuffle as “disturbing & unsettling.” She wrote: “Is so disturbing to me that the world we’re living in has made us has feel the need to have to always be aware of our surroundings. Looking over your shoulder in public places such as a concert where you’d like to feel free & distress from life’s worries seems so sad to me... but this is the world we live in unfortunately.”
