Meghan Trainor sang an EDM version of a Selena Gomez track and put a Soca spin on a Harry Styles hit during her appearance on Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The singer joined Fallon for the "Musical Genre Challenge," a regular bit in which the host and his guest musical artist take turns singing a popular song in a different genre. (Although staged to look like the selections are random, the are pre-determined and rehearsed.)
Trainor was tasked with singing part of Gomez’s “Lose You To Love Me” as a thumping EDM track and then doing a portion of Styles’ “Adore You” as a Soca song.
“That’s like what I grew up with so I love Soca music,” said Trainor, whose uncle Burton Toney is a recording artist from Tobago.
Her last selection was T-Pain’s “Booty Wurk” as a soft pop ballad, complete with saxophone.
Among Fallon’s song challenges was a version of the Tones and I hit “Dance Monkey” done in the style of Frank Sinatra.
While at The Tonight Show, Trainor also performed her new single “Nice to Meet Ya” from her album Treat Myself. During a recent interview with iHeartRadio’s Elvis Duran, Trainor admitted she was “pissed” that Niall Horan released a song last October with the same title.
“I was like, ‘Oh no, what do we do? Do we change it, do we say something else?’ It truly couldn’t be any other title,” she said. “Niall’s really nice. I love him. Every time I see him, he’s amazing to me, but I couldn’t change it.”
