Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett have a tradition of ... um ... honouring local legends in whatever city Metallica plays on tour.
In the middle of the set, when frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich take a short respite, Trujillo and Hammett trade solos and attempt at least one shabby cover song.
It's generally understood that the covers are meant to create a lighthearted moment. Trujillo generally shouts the words while reading them from pages on a music stand. Neither musician adjusts the tone of his guitar to suit whatever song they're attempting.
At best, it's silly. At worst ... it's them trying "When Doves Cry" in Minneapolis.
The band posted video of the "doodle" to its official YouTube account Wednesday, but perplexed fans had already been going back and forth on social media, exchanging outrage and amusement.
