Nick Jonas made his debut as a coach on The Voice on Monday night's season 18 premiere – and found himself on stage singing a bit of Ed Sheeran's "Perfect."
Jonas wanted to show contestant Tate Brusa how to get more out of his voice. The 16-year-old had just auditioned with a rendition of “Perfect” that was a bit shaky – but managed to get Jonas and fellow coach Blake Shelton to turn their chairs.
Jonas offered the teenager some “real time coaching” and stepped onto the stage and took Brusa’s guitar.
“When I was 16, just having come through that point in your voice when it starts to break – I know it well – I would rely on just my throat,” the pop star said. “What I want you to do is think about your posture.”
After singing part of Sheeran’s song, Jonas told Brusa: “It’s the vowel sounds that help you open up a bit more.”
Jonas was anxious to be Brusa’s coach. “We could do great things together,” said Jonas, who didn’t know at the time that Brusa had already described himself as a big fan of the Jonas Brothers.
Shelton, despite bringing out a puppy in hopes of appealing to Brusa’s heart, never stood a chance.
“Sorry, Blake. I gotta go with Nick,” he said.
