Fans of The Rolling Stones got a blast from the past last week when the band’s first live performance of “Sympathy For The Devil” premiered on YouTube.
Filmed in December 1968 in London, the song was part of The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, a BBC special directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg featuring the original line-up of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman (with support from Nicky Hopkins and Rocky Dijon).
Jones, seen playing maracas instead of guitar, died seven months later.
The performance of “Sympathy For The Devil” – a track on Beggars Banquet – was reportedly done at 5:30 a.m. (John Lennon makes a cameo at the 04:54 mark.)
“It was an incredible shoot, I think, 36 hours or something,” Keith Richards recalled, in a release. "I remember not remembering everything towards the end… but it was fun… we went through two audiences… wore one out… it was great!”
