Selena Gomez has released her highly anticipated single “Lose You To Love Me” – an emotional ballad that many fans believe is about her ex Justin Bieber.
“In two months you replaced us / like it was easy,” she sings. “Made me think I deserved it / in the thick of healing.”
Gomez and Bieber had an on-again, off-again relationship for more than seven years but split for good in early 2018. He was engaged to Hailey Baldwin four months later.
"We'd always go into it blindly / I needed to lose you to find me / This dancing was killing me softly / I needed to hate you to love me / I needed to lose you to love me,” Gomez sings. "I saw the signs and I ignored it / Rose-colored glasses all distorted.”
The 27-year-old pop star also sings: “You promised the world and I fell for it / I put you first and you adored it / You set fires to my forest / And you let it burn / Sang off-key in my chorus 'cause it wasn't yours.”
Some fans believe the last line is a reference to her collaborations with Bieber – 2013’s “Can’t Steal Our Love” and 2014’s “Unfamiliar.”
“Lose You To Love Me” is the first solo single from Gomez since last year’s “Back to You” (she is featured on “I Can’t Get Enough” with Benny Blanco, Tainy and J Balvin) and the first taste of her third album (her first since 2015’s Revival).
The track was co-written by Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter and producers Mattias Larsson and Robin Fredriksson. It came with a video, shot on an iPhone 11.
“Thank you all for standing by my side through the highs and lows,” Gomez tweeted Tuesday night. "I couldn’t do it without you all and I can’t wait to start my next adventure with you.”
