Shawn Mendes sings about being lonely in his downtown Toronto condo in his brand new song, “If I Can’t Have You.”
“I’m in Toronto and I’ve got this view / But I might as well be in a hotel room, yeah,” he laments in the first verse. “It doesn’t matter ‘cause I’m so consumed / Spending all my nights reading texts from you.”
The song – his first new music since the release of his self-titled third studio album last year – was co-writtten with Scott Harris, Teddy Geiger, Nate Mercereau. Late Thursday, Niall Horan showed his friend some support by tweeting that "If I Can't Have You" is "a banger."
Mendes, who is currently on a world tour, will perform the song this weekend on Saturday Night Live.
The video shows Mendes in a near-empty warehouse in front of a silhouette of the iconic CN Tower, playing on a grand piano, laying in bed (with a woman!), and running on a treadmill. At one point, a choir shows up.
