Taron Egerton’s recording of the 1972 classic “Rocket Man” was released Thursday ahead of the Elton John biopic opening in cinemas.
The 29-year-old British actor portrays the legendary singer in Rocketman, out May 31, and did his own singing.
The official video combines scenes from the movie with clips of Egerton in a recording studio.
Last year, John’s Canadian husband David Furnish told The Hollywood Reporter that the singer was “really blown away” by Egerton’s recordings of his songs for the film.
“Elton has told Taron, ‘Don’t copy me. Don’t think you have to sing it exactly the way that I sang it. Don’t think you have to perform it the way I performed it’.
“I think it’s the challenge for the actor to embody the spirit and not get into thinking they have to do an impersonation.”
"Rocket Man" is one of 22 songs on the Rocketman soundtrack, which will be released a week before the film. There’s one new song, “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” written by John and Bernie Taupin for the end credits of the film and performed by John and Egerton.
The two teamed up in February to perform “Tiny Dancer” at John’s annual Oscar night party.
Rocketman will have its world premiere at the Cannes film festival on May 16.
