Taylor Swift does drag in the video for her anthem “The Man,” which debuted Thursday morning.
The pop star was transformed into a bearded guy who’s the boss both at the office and out of it. He man-spreads and smokes a cigar on the subway, pees with impunity against a wall, gets celebrated for being a dad, and throws a tantrum on the tennis court. Fast forward and he is in a Las Vegas wedding chapel with his trophy wife.
At the end of the video, Swift gives some notes to her alter-ego – "Could you try to be sexier? Maybe more likeable this time?" – before praising the a female extra on the soundstage for her "astonishing" work.
Even though it’s Swift under the facial hair, the character’s voice was provided by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The track, which Swift wrote and produced with Joel Little, was released in January as the fourth single from her 2019 album Lover.
"Wondering if I’d get there quicker If I was a man," Swift sings. "I’m so sick of them coming at me again / ‘cause if I was a man... / Then I’d be the man."
With the video for "The Man," Swift joins a long list of female artists who have directed one of their music videos, including Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, Rihanna, Kesha and Canada’s Grimes.
