A contestant on the Australian version of The Voice proposed to his boyfriend on the show – and got an early wedding present from coach Kelly Rowland.
After Nathan Brake popped the question – and his partner of six years, Mitchell Baines, said “yes” – the Destiny’s Child singer promised to sing “When Love Takes Over” on their special day.
“Are you serious?,” Brake, 26, asked.
“I’m very serious,” Rowland replied. “If you give me a mic and a guitar, honey, we will make that thing happen.
“I would be honoured to sing at your wedding. Honoured.”
The proposal came in the moments after Brake auditioned with the Nick Jonas song “Jealous” and before he had to choose a coach. As Rowland, Boy George, Joe Jonas and Delta Goodrem looked on, he asked Baines to join him on the stage.
“We’ve had a beautiful six year together,” said Brake. “You’ve been a constant support for me over these past six years so I just wanted to ask you, ‘Will you marry me?’”
Rowland was ecstatic when Baines replied: “Yes, of course!” The singer was the first of the coaches to give the couple congratulatory hugs.
Jonas, who captured the proposal on video, exclaimed “Ahhhh s**t!” when the couple kissed.
“I love an unexpected proposal,” Boy George said, as the studio audience cheered.
Turns out, it was the second proposal for the couple. The two men got engaged three years ago with a plan to tie the knot overseas – but Brake decided to do another proposal after Australia introduced equal marriage rights last December.
“If I can help one child just watching, one kid, just sitting there, feeling different, feeling like they’re not good enough,” he told The Voice. “Then what more could I ask for?”
On Instagram, Brake shared: “THANK YOU for the overwhelming amount of love and support! Our hearts are so full. THIS is what our beautiful country is about, love, acceptance and equality. I’m so excited to share this journey with you all!”
As for a coach, Brake – who was a finalist on Australian Idol in 2009 – chose Goodrem, an Australian singer and actress.
