On Thursday’s episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden, the host opined that no contemporary male singer has been able to match the sensuality of greats like Marvin Gaye.
“I feel like there aren’t male artists out there doing sensual, soulful vocals anymore,” Corden complained.
“This might sound arrogant but I think I’m probably the sexiest male vocalist alive. I believe I’ve got a sensualness and a sexuality in my voice that no one…”
Just then, Usher appeared in the studio to challenge Corden.
“Let’s be honest,” the singer said. “When people imagine a smooth, sensual, sexual, soulful voice are they going to picture a guy like you or do they think of a guy like me?”
And with that, it was on.

Usher welcomed a cappella group The Filharmonic and the challenge began.
Corden crooned part of the 1997 K-Ci & Jojo hit “All My Life.” Usher countered with Marvin Gaye’s 1971 classic “Mercy Mercy Me.”
Suddenly, out came actor Luke Evans. “Do you guys think this is sexy? Because there is nothing sexy about what’s happening here,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned then you guys to battle it out for second and third place.”
Evans launched into Foreigner’s 1984 hit “I Want To Know What Love Is.”
The segment ended with all three singing Al Green’s 1972 track “Let’s Stay Together.”
