Weezer, which is enjoying success with their cover of Toto’s 1982 hit “Africa,” performed the song this week on Jimmy Kimmel Live with a special guest.
Toto member Steve Porcaro came out on stage to add his familiar keyboard solo.
But what had people talking more was Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo reading the song’s lyrics off a laptop sitting on a stool in front of him.
Weezer’s version of “Africa,” which they recorded in response to a fan request, has become the band’s highest-charting single in nearly a decade.
Toto guitarist Steve Lukather told the Ernie Ball Blog he loves the renewed attention. “"The streaming numbers and radio play are insane," he said. “Maybe some kids will come check out the old guys play the original music.”
Not surprisingly, Toto announced on Tuesday they have added 21 shows on their 40th anniversary tour. The 40 Trips Around The Sun Tour kicks off July 30 in Vancouver and stops in Windsor, Ont. on Aug. 23.
