If there is one thing every Weezer fan can agree on, it's that the band's 1994 debut album (aka The Blue Album) is a bona fide, '90s alt-rock classic. And so it should excite just about everyone that they are planning on a big celebration for next year's 30th anniversary.
In an interview with Collider, frontman Rivers Cuomo explained that he and his bandmates want to do something special after ignoring the album's 20th anniversary.
“We’re putting ideas together,” he said. “It’s just this tidal wave of passion. So, we are going to give it its due respect and come out with a really amazing deluxe package with a bunch of additional material, and of course, we’ve gotta do some kind of epic tour.”
Weezer currently have a 2024 tour of the UK and Ireland scheduled with Smashing Pumpkins until June, but Cuomo says they hope to line up dates following that commitment.
“I think the public tour dates cut off in June and then there’s this very suspicious blank space in our calendar for months after that, so I’d keep your eye on that," he said.
Elsewhere in the interview, Cuomo revealed that Weezer have written a sequel to their 1994 hit single, "Undone (The Sweater Song)," though it won't be included in the deluxe reissue.
"It's called 'CEO,'" Cuomo added, "and it's gonna be on our next album. It's a sequel to 'The Sweater Song.' It's totally meta and mind-bending."
The Blue Album did already receive a deluxe edition in 2004, containing a bonus disc of extras called Dusty Gems And Raw Nuggets, so fans will have to wait and see what the band has left to remove from the vault.
