It’s August 27th and these are some of the things that happened on this day in pop music history:

- In 1994, Boyz II Men started a 14-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “I’ll Make Love To You.” The song was finally bumped from the top spot in December – by Boys II Men’s “On Bended Knee.”

- In 2003, Grammy-winning American singer Janis Ian married lawyer Patricia Snyder at Toronto City Hall. Among the couple’s friends at the ceremony was author George R.R. Martin.

- In 2017, Katy Perry the MTV Video Music Awards, where Taylor Swift debuted the video for “Look What You Made Me Do.” Pink, who was honoured with the Video Vanguard Award, performed a medley of her hits.

- In 1988, George Michael’s “Monkey” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two weeks. It was his fourth No. 1 hit of the year.

- In 1988, Tracy Chapman’s self-titled debut album went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The single “Fast Car” peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100 and earned Chapman a pair of Grammy nominations.

- In 2012, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis released “Thrift Shop” as the fourth single from the duo’s debut album The Heist. Featuring vocals by Wanz, the song went to No. 1 in several countries, including Canada, and won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance at the Grammy Awards.
