Two women were arrested this week after promising to book artists like Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars for a charity concert.
Nancy Jean, 51, of Georgia and Carissa Scott, 41, of Mississippi were taken into custody at JFK airport in New York City.
They are accused of posing as booking agents to bilk investors of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Jean and Scott allegedly claimed to be able to get the music stars to do a benefit for the Sandy Hook Promise Foundation at San Antonio’s Alamodome.
When investors became suspicious, authorities were contacted and an investigation was launched. Scott allegedly told an undercover FBI agent posing as a concert investor that she could book acts like Ed Sheeran and Drake for the show.
Reps for all the music stars told investigators they had never heard of the two accused.
“As alleged, the defendants viewed a fundraiser for a charity formed to protect children from gun violence as an opportunity to commit fraud and line their own pockets,” United States Attorney Richard P. Donoghue said, in a release. “Simple stealing is bad enough, this is worse.”
