If you're a student at Washington University and intrigued by the legacy otherwise known as Kanye West, you're in luck, because the rap superstar is getting his very own course at the institute.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "Politics of Kanye West: Black Genius and Sonic Aesthetics" will be instructed by Dr. Jeffrey McCune, an associate professor in the African and African-American Studies and the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies departments. The teachings will be offered to 75 registered students. At time of press, there was a waiting list for additional spots on the course.
Among the lecture topics on the syllabus for the 14-week course include "Who is Kanye West and Why is He in the Flashing Lights?," "Touch the Sky, When the Aspirant Turns Genius," "I Love Kanye, or How Critique Slips Into Hate" and, of course, "The Swift Moment."
"I always wanted to teach a course looking at black genius and the impossibility of black genius for the American public," McCune told the paper. "We're always thought of as maybe being articulate or smart but not really genius… I knew my students had connections to Kanye. They’re always referencing his music and performances and videos and fashion. What better time than now to take seriously Kanye West as a cultural icon? I’m always interested in how he’s pushing whatever boundaries."
