Province announces contract recipient to build new Kootenay Lake ferry
BC's Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says Western Pacific Marine Ltd. out of Vancouver is being awarded the $62.9 million contract to build a new ferry for Kootenay Lake.
The new ship should ready for service in early 2023.
Doubling the capacity of it's predecessor, the MV Balfour which is being retired, the new vessel will be larger, cleaner and more accessible.
The electric-ready ship will be fully converted to electric propulsion by 2030 as the province is working to electrify the inland ferry fleet by 2040.
It's also set to accommodate up to 55-vehicles and when used in tandem with the larger MV Osprey 2000 will reduce sail waiting times during busy summer months.
