Slocan Community Health Centre getting two new physicians

Good news for the New Denver area, with two new physicians joining the local health care team at the Slocan Community Health Centre.

Mayor Leonard Casley says they've been working on stabilizing health care services in the community for two years, which is important for the area that sees a lot of motorcycle and tourist traffic.

According to Casley, the nearest major ER is in Trail, which is a distance away, and winter road conditions that can leave them semi isolated.

He says it's been a collaborative effort to get the physicians to the area, with hard work by long time New Denver doc Chuck Burkholder, local communities, the province, IH, the BC Rural Health Network and the Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice physician group among other key stakeholders.

The community will now have 24/7 coverage for the communities emergency department, using a shared practice's an 18 month contract so they'll re-evaluate at that point and see what's working and what's not.
