Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Opens New Emergency Department

KBRH first patient (3) (Small)

The new emergency department at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital is open.

The department has nearly tripled in size and features a technologically advanced trauma room, private patient exam rooms, procedure rooms, specialized spaces to treat infectious diseases and to provide support for mental health patients as well as their families. The project also includes a new separate entrance for patients.

The project cost just over $19-million, with over $7-million coming from the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital District, while the KBRH Health Foundation raised over $1-million to buy some of the equipment.

Work from this project included the foundation for the new Ambulatory Care and Pharmacy wing.

Interior Health said the contract for that $39-million project will be awarded this fall.

The former Emergency Department space at the Trail facility is being converted for mental health  patients and their families, with those renovations expected to be completed in early 2021.

Derrick Leduc was the new emergency department’s first patient.
