Update-RDCK Adds Salmo/Ymir to Evacuation Orders


The Regional District of Central Kootenay has issued more Evacuation Orders.

About 300 properties in Salmo and Ymir were ordered evacuated Sunday night over fears the swelling Salmo River would jump its banks.

They are located on Airport Road, Audrey Avenue, Bakken Road, Balsam Street, Carney Bridge Road, Cedar Avenue, Cherry Street, Cottonwood Avenue, Delaurentis Road, Eighth Street, First Avenue, Forrister Road, Fourth Street, Glendale Avenue, Hanson Avenue, Helgren Road, Hutton Road, Highway 3, Highway 3 and 6, Highway 6, Liness Road, Motel Avenue, Ninth Street, Oscar Bear Road, Porcupine Creek Road, Quartz Avenue, Riverside Avenue, Salmo Heights Road, Sayward Lane, Second Avenue, Second Relief Road, Sixth Street, Third Street, Wesco Road, Whiteline Road, and Wildwood Road.

Residents and visitors at those properties were told to go to Best Western Hotel in Trail.

The evacuation Order for Slocan River area south of the Village issued late Sunday night was recinded.

Residents and visitors from about 160 Duhamel Creek properties in area "F" on the North Shore were told to leave Sunday afternoon and report to The Best Western Hotel in Nelson.

That order affects properties on Duhamel Road, Barnes Road, Highway 3-A, Lower Six Mile Road and Tees Road.

A separate order was issued for another 22 properties on Broadwater Road in area ‘J” and those being  evacuated were told to go to Castlegar’s Sandman Inn.

RDCK emergency officials said people who have vacated will not be allowed back until it is deemed safe and permission has been given by local officials and emergency personnel.

Crawford Creek residents were advised to leave Saturday night because of the imminent danger posed by the prospect of severe flooding.

All other areas in the RDCK except Nelson and Castlegar remain on Evacuation Alert meaning residents should be prepared to leave on short notice.
