First Nations Come Together to Protect Environment of Traditional Territory

Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla have agreed to work together to proctect their Coast Tsimshian territory.

On July 15th, Mayor John Helin and Chief Harold Leighton met in Prince Rupert to sign the Stewardship Protocol Agreement, committing the nations to fairness, equality and mutual respect when accomplishing stewardship goals.

In today's press release, Helin is quoted saying, "Working together allows us to better protect our environment. We have always said that we need to do more to protect our lands and waters, and this is putting those words into action."

The agreement will combine expertise and resources from the Metlakatla Stewardship Society and the Lax Kw'alaams Integrated Resources to defend the environment and resources of the Coast Tsimshian Territory.
