Premier John Horgan says public elementary and secondary schools will resume to finish this school year -- but attendance will not be mandatory.
Horgan says parents and their students must decide if they are comfortable returning to class while the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
He says the relaunch of schools is being planned with the full support of health officials.
"It's time now, starting on June 1st, for students to have the option to return to school on a part-time basis; this step will pave the way for cleaner and smoother reintroduction of full-time classses in September."
In order to ensure physical distancing, students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 will return to class on a half-time basis, such as alternating days, while students from Grade 6 to Grade 12 will be back in class for one day per week.
Families can expect to see the new class schedules by May 22nd.
