UNBC Semester Exams Cancelled; Calendar Extended
The University of Northern BC Senate has decided to cancel exams this semester, and has added an extra 10 days to the instructional calendar, in the wake of a strike by faculty members which had cancelled classes for over three weeks in November.
The decision was made yesterday afternoon, at a special meeting of the university senate.
Today was supposed to be the final day of classes.
The senate acknowledged the extension of the semester to December 13th will create complications -- especially for international students at the university, who had already made travel plans or face the expiration of their student visas.
Some flexibility will be granted to students with special circumstances -- and in some cases, foreign students will be allowed to finish their courses at other universities which have working relationships with UNBC.
The Faculty Association suspended its picketing actions and returned to classrooms in Terrace and Prince George yesterday, while the Labour Relations Board considers a complaint of bad-faith bargaining filed last week by the association against the university's administration.
