Hamilton is under a heat warning with stifling temperatures expected into the weekend.

Environment Canada meteorologists expect the heat to really kick in this afternoon and last until Sunday, but they warn the heat event could continue into next week as well.

Temperatures are expected to feel like the high 30s to low 40s for the rest of this week.

There won't be much relief at night either with nighttime lows sitting around 20 - 23 degrees.

The Hamilton Public Library on York Boulevard, Norman Pinky Lewis Rec Centre, and Sackville Hill Senior's Centre will be opening as cooling centres to help keep residents safe.

Anyone using those spaces is asked to maintain physical distancing and wear a face covering or a mask.

Symptoms of heat related illness can include dizziness, fainting, nausea, rapid breathing, and extreme thirst.
