Bathurst mayor encouraged by appointment of Minister of Local Governance Reform

news-update

Bathurst's mayor says the province appointing a Cabinet minister for municipal reform is encouraging and welcomed.

Former Dieppe councillor Daniel Allain was named minister of of the newly-named Department of Local Government and Local Governance Reform on Tuesday.

Mayor Paolo Fongemie says the Cities of New Brunswick Association has been calling municipal reform, including property tax reform, for several years and that Allain's experience as a councillor has given him a strong grasp on the challenges municipalities are facing.

Fongemie says Allain and his deputy minister will be able to forge ahead with 'good consultations' on inequities relating to municipalities and citizens of Local Service Districts who benefit from municipal services without paying for them.
